About Slow The Flow

In December 2015 the River Calder burst its banks after torrential overnight storm as  more than 60mm (some places had 100) of rain fell in 24 hours over Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Flood sirens sounded and residents awoke to an unfolding nightmare. Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd were basically underwater. Sowerby Bridge, Elland and Brighouse were badly affected with Buildings and Bridges along the river being washed away. Overall 2,781 homes and 4,416 businesses were flooded along the Calder Valley.

Slow The Flow wanted to help alleviate the flooding. They looked at the issue of why and how the Calder Valley floods and at natural flood prevention measures and solutions to slow the volume of water which comes down the hillsides into the River Calder. They basically make leaky dams which slow the flow of water from the uplands and allows it to be held back and spread out where it can be absorbed naturally and this stops the river being overwhelmed in times of heavy downpour.

They have been working with volunteers to build 100s of leaky dams and to create large storage areas. Slow The Flow members are mostly local and are all volunteers giving up their time to secure a future for the Calder Valley and all who live, work and visit here.
